Mad Pizza e Bar, Surry Hills
I have walked past this place many times and have always wondered. So one evening when both ‘The Mother’ and I were craving pizza I suggested this place. Mad Pizza is located on the busy street of Crown Street, next door to Mad Mex.
The place was dark, cosy decor and cosy atmosphere. There was a DJ playing on Saturday night and I have to say, I quite enjoyed the music that evening. There are plenty of seating, but extremely busy on Saturday night. There are no table service, you order at the bar and food will then be delivered to your table.
We started with the bruschetta di pomodoro ($12) – grilled flat bread topped with warm roast peppers, feta, olives and basil with balsamico. It was a little messy to eat, but it was incredibly delicious, and I loved the balsamic vinegar!
Mad Pizza claims they make super thin and healthy pizza. I don’t know about the ‘healthy’ bit, I mean seriously, how healthy can a pizza be? But indeed it was super thin! ‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the pepperoni ($19.20 for 13 inch) – sliced pepperoni, roma toatos, black kalamata olives, basil leaves and if you want anchovies an extra $1. We asked for chili to give it that extra kick and it was pretty damn tasty.
We haven’t been back to eat at the restaurant per se, but we have ordered a couple of things on the menu. The o tropo – grilled chicken, crisp bacon, pineapple chunks, read onion with spicy pirri pirri sauce is a definite favourite of mine. ‘The Mother’ not so as he doesn’t like pineapple on his pizza. He does like the suprema though – pepperoni, bacon, onion, peppers and field mushroom.
Service minimal, but the pizza I definitely like! It’s been a while since my last visit to Rosso Pomodoro or Pizza Marrio or Pizza E Birra, so it’s a little hard to compare but no doubt I will be visiting them soon!
