New Shanghai, Chatswood
I can’t remember the last time I went to Chatswood, let alone Chatswood Chase! I didn’t even know that New Shanghai opened there. It can be found in the lower ground floor food court, and there were a massive queue outside which is a good sign. They don’t take reservations, so diners are to get a number and once your number is called you are then seated.
The menu is vast, which offers a range of Shanghainese cuisine ranging from noodles, soups, rice and vegetable dishes. We perused the menu and definitely wanted the xiao long bao – steamed mini pork buns. Eight delicious, juicy xiao long bao – they were fantastic and I could have definitely eaten them all on my own!
We had originally wanted the New Shanghai pan fried pork buns but I ordered the wrong ones and got the pan fried pork dumplings. They were just as hazardous as the pork buns, hot juice squirts out of the dumplings if eaten at an angle.
The shanghai noodle stir fried with shredded pork and vegetables were good, but nothing special I thought.
I especially LOVED the pork belly braised overnight in sweet soy sauce. OMG! Tender and plump pork, it had the ‘right’ amount of meat and fat, the sweet soy sauce was perfect, not too rich. Probably one of my favourite dishes of all time!
Lastly, fried garlic American pork ribs. Deep fried, the garlic was subtle, but the ribs were tender and succulent!
Service was friendly and efficient and we were beyond stuffed! Will definitely be returning to try their other dishes, wouldn’t mind trying the deep fried blue swimmer crab coated with salted egg yolk! YUM!
Thanks to George from Wasamedia and New Shanghai, it was absolutely delicious and we will be back!

same! we thought we would pick our own food but the dumpling degustation would have been good too!
We did the wine and dumplings at New Shanghai and were really impressed. Especially for a restaurant in a shopping centre
