Huong Huong, Marrickville

The family doesn’t venture to Marrickville very often. However, it was Mum’s birthday and we were all sick of our usual Eateries in Eastwood and Carlingford. Huong Huong (HH) has been around for many years now, 20 or plus years and remember coming here for dinner when we were young. The owners haven’t changed, and after so many years of not returning, I was surprised that they still remembered my parents!

When they first started, HH only served a small selection of Chinese and Vietnamese dishes, however, I noticed that they have also added Indonesian and Thai cuisines. They boasts they have over 400 culinary combinations – the menu was extensive – four different types of cuisine – it was just too hard to choose, everything sounded wonderful.

We started with the sizzling beef, I love how the food ‘sizzles’ as it is placed on the table. Served on the cast iron plate, the food is constantly warm. The beef was tender and succulent when first eaten, however, as the beef was kept ‘warm’, I felt that it was no longer tender or succulent. Dad thought it was tough towards the end.

The lemon grass and chili squid is one of their signature dishes and was a favourite amongst the diners that evening. Thin and crunchy batter, the chili was succulent that we all fought for every single last piece.

Next came the salt and pepper tofu. Again the batter was thin and crunchy and the tofu was incredibly tender and moist that it required no chewing.

The nasi goreng campur (fried rice with a mixture of beef, chicken and seafood) was excellent. I love that ‘wok’ smell and taste – it really gives it that extra flavouring.

The kwie tiau siram (seafood rice noodles) also had that wonderful ‘wok’ aroma and was full of flavour. This was also a popular dish amongst the diners. I love the soft thick and wide rice noodles, and the seafood were scrumptiously good!

We were getting full by this stage but as always, there were more food! The seafood hot pot was good but a little disappointing. I thought it was a little bland – the tofu was nice but it lacked taste.

I loved the ayam goreng mertega (buttered fried chicken). This was an Indonesian dish and one I thoroughly enjoyed. The chicken was succulent, and tender and goey from the honey. Cooked with butter, this was just sublime! However, F thought it was a little sickly after a while but no, it didn’t have that affect on me. I loved it!

Mum wanted to order the 3 colour bean drink – a mix of yellow and red bean with green jelly topped with crushed ice, coconut juice and syrup. This was refreshingly sweet and went down too easily and quickly!

The food came out very quickly – one after the other. Service efficient and friendly. The place was busy and full on a weekday. They do take aways if you wish to eat at the comfort of your own home.

The total bill came to about 100, the most expensive dish that we had was the seafood hot pot ($18), it was a shame that it didn’t live up to its expectations. We saw someone ordered the crispy skin chicken with tomato rice and it looked fantastic! Generous servings, I would be more than happy to come back and try their other dishes, especially the crispy fried chicken.
