Sydney Sydney Sydney!

So I am in Sydney this week – and sadly I am already missing Hubby and Hong Kong! I forgot how FAR Sydney is from Hong Kong! In fact, Sydney is far from everywhere! 9 hours flight to Sydney and if I was going somewhere else, I could be in London or somewhere in Europe! Alas… am here..

I didn’t tell anyone about my trip – not even my friends (well except for two people!) and my brother. My parents didn’t even know – I really wanted to surprise them, so hence the secrecy! Let’s just say I am glad I didn’t say anything to anyone as it was a ‘nice’ surprise and dad’s reaction was totally unforgettable! His first question to me was ‘what are you doing here?’ Um…. for work? Mum was also shocked – she had a little bit of tears coming out of her eyes – I guess they both really did miss me!

I didn’t even bring clothes back to Sydney – as I have left all my work clothes and shoes here. I only brought my winter stuff from Hong Kong back! Let’s hope I don’t need them!!

I am missing Hubby already – had our first ‘skype’ session and boy it was weird! I guess this is what long distance is all about… I am, however, looking forward to catching up with friends!

Of course, a trip is not a trip if it didn’t include food… I have made a list of places I wanted to go, however, am a little confused of where to go tomorrow night! So the lists thus far are:

Ok so that’s a long list!! I will most likely not eat at all of them as I am sure other restaurants will come up! Regardless – I am sure I will eat well this week! There goes the CNY post diet!!!!! I think ‘diet’ and ‘I’ just don’t go hand in hand!

I am seriously hoping for some sun and warm weather but just checked the weather forecast and it’s supposed to rain ALL WEEK! ‘Light’ rain they say, either morning or night but still… RAIN!!!! Did I bring the rain back from Hong Kong? Like I brought the rain back from Harbin to Hong Kong… come on! Give me some sun!!!! Perfect evening though ….

The Mon

This place was recommended by a fellow foodie in Hong Kong (@jasonbonvivant). Came here for lunch with a friend, and we ordered their tamagoyaki (sweet egg) which was their signature dish, grilled ox tongue and pork with onions skewers, and crab croquette.

The tamagoyaki with crab was absolutely fantastic! It was served uncut – a thick slab of egg. You could taste the crab within the egg, it was creamy and deliciously sweet but not sickening. It was truly their signature dish.

If you look closer, the tamagoyaki was engraved ‘The Mon’.

We each at a serve (one skewer!!!!) of ox tongue and teriyaki pork with onions. The ox tongue was grilled, and the texture was fantastic. It was tender and juicy, a little on the salty side for me but it was still pretty good. The teriyaki pork was also tasty and tender. My only gripe is that it’s a small serving! I mean 1 serve is just one skewer? You would think 2 right?

Last but not least, the crab croquette, filled with potatoes and crab, these little croquettes were deep fried. Can be eaten alone or with a dollop of mayonnaise, served with a side of greens.

We were both pretty content and really enjoyed the Mon. Would highly recommend making a reservation. I have tried coming here for dinner again, but was sent away as it was fully booked.

Hang Zhou Restaurant

This place was recommended by a friend who loves food as much as I do, possibly more!! Came here with Hubby and cousin in law and I have to admit, it’s one of the best meals I have had that week! We were all hungry and decided to order 5 dishes and yes… we finished it all!

Started off with the braised pork belly with man tao (Chinese steamed buns). The braised pork belly was to die for! It was unbelievably tender and not so fatty.

The pork eaten on its own was a little salty, however, wrapped in man tao – it was just perfect. These were an absolute delight and went down extremely quickly!!

The fried duck also came with man tao… the duck was crispy and tender. It was a little boney for my liking, however, it was still absolutely delicious.

No Chinese meal is complete without steamed fish! So we got steamed fish with ginger and shallots. The fish was cooked to perfection – it was fresh and tender and flavoursome.

Steamed tofu and fish with chili, tofu was so moist that it just broke apart if you didn’t pick it up properly and the fish was fresh. The chili gave it a nice ‘kick’ to the dish.

Last but not least, Spinach in broth. Served with several pieces of preserved pork (ham), this dish was simple but an absolute delight.

We demolished everything! Everything was just utterly delicious. One of my favourite ‘Hang Zhou’ restaurant thus far.

Big Bite Burgers

I have been craving for a burger for a while now and this place was recommended by a friend (@coffeemeow) as it is close to where I live. Decided to come here for a late breakfast one Saturday with Hubby and it was one of the best ‘breakfast’ I have ever had!

Big Bite is in North Point, the latest American burger to open here in Hong Kong and located on a street outside the shopping mall, Fit Fort. It’s not a big place, quite small and I can imagine it could get extremely busy at lunch time. We were there relatively early, so it was still quiet and without really perusing the menu closely, I knew I wanted a burger! Just what kind. Everything is made to order, as it should, so its fresh!

I got the ‘sloppy joe’ – which was burger with chili. I was informed that it will be messy and well… they were right! When I first looked at the burger, my first impression was – WOW, how am I going to fit this in my mouth! Where there is a will, there is a way! The beef was tender and was cooked to perfection! The bun was slightly toasted, it was soft and was served with cheese, tomatoes, onions and chili – this is a must try, an experience on its own!

Hubby ordered the Jumbo hotdog with chili. Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy this one as much, Hubby seemed too though. It is, however, one of the better hotdogs I have tried in Hong Kong.

We ordered a side of fries and it was good – crispy on the outside but soft on the inside.

I have yet to try other burger joints in Hong Kong, so can’t do much of a comparison! However, I did enjoy it and would definitely be back…I can envisage coming here for a hangover cure! Dangerous!!

Restaurant Balzac

This was on my must try place for a while now and was finally glad when we finally went there! Situated in Randwick, Sydney, this place serves a combination of French and British food. The menu is quite intensive, ranging from fish, to white meat to red meat. They also have two different types of degustation, one of them is daily which includes 8 different types of dishes (including dessert) and the other is their famous once a month Sunday degustation meal.

I have yet to try the degustation menu, however, Hubby went for a friend’s dinner and he said it was fantastic – great value and great food! We didn’t have the degustation the last time we were there.

Hubby ordered the grain fed rump, oxtail with sweetbreads and bone marrow – this dish was delicious. The grain fed rump was cooked to perfection – medium rare and the bone marrow was soft and tender. Served with baby carrots, greens and onions this dish was simply divine.

I ordered the pan fried barramundi with a cassoulet of braised pork belly. The fish was fresh and tender, the cassoulet of braised pork belly was unbelievably rich but extremely tasty. It was a great compliment to the pan fried barramundi.

We ordered a side of roasted potatoes with beef dripping, rosemary and garlic. These potatoes were scrumptious! Slightly crunchy on the outside and fluffy and moist on the inside… the best roasted potatoes I have ever had.

Dessert was bread and butter pudding – and believe me, when I tell you that Restaurant Balzac makes the best bread and butter pudding! Unfortunately for us, I didn’t take a photo of what the bread and butter pudding looked like! I took a photo of what was left….

NOTHING! We absolutely demolished the bread and butter pudding, I think we even licked the plate and left nothing! It was rich, but not sickly, it was moist and melted in your mouth… it was heavenly! I think we may have to go back there just to have the bread and butter pudding! I think this dessert is one of their specialty and a must try for those who dine there.

I have to say this is one of my favourite yakitori places thus far and is located on the 26th floor of a commercial building in the heart of Causeway Bay. It is quite a small space with minimal décor. Majority of the food offered are on skewers and portions are quite small – which means you can eat more and try everything! The menu also offers different types of sake.

Fugu (puffer fish) jerky: I wouldn’t have known that this was fugu – I would have thought it was shrimp. It was crunchy and a little salty, however, the mayo sauce gave it a real nice touch.

Selected Sashimi – salmon and king fish – cut into thick slices, this was unbelievably fresh and tasty!

Beef ox tongue skewers: this was absolutely divine! The ox tongue was very flavourful and tender. One of the best ox tongue I have had for a while.

Bacon with lychee skewers: their signature dish and it was a standout. Who would have thought lychee wrapped with bacon and grilled? The saltiness from the bacon and the sweetness of the lychee really worked! One of my favourites!

Pork skewers: this was quite a simple dish but tasty. The honey glaze on the pork really worked well.

We tried two other vegetable skewers: sweet potato and corn. The corn was unbelievably juicy and the sweet potato was soft and sweet.

Everything we tried tonight was superb. The veggies were juicy and sweet, the meats absolutely aromatic, tender and tasty, and the sauces were divine.

Would definitely come back here again.

Pier… One of the best seafood restaurant

Pier, one of the best seafood restaurants that I have been too in Sydney. This is one of those restaurants that you would take investors to dine and yes, I have been here with work a couple of times now but I came here one evening with Hubby, as he has never been. This place has been around for a while now and is run by Greg Doyle. Overlooking the water, some believe that he has taken this restaurant into the top league. The menu is quite extensive with different types of seafood, however, never fear, if you are allergic to seafood, they do serve steak and mushroom risotto but their specialty is seafood!

We both ordered an entrée each, Hubby ordered half a dozen of oysters – pacific oysters and they were extremely fresh. Dipped in vinaigrette these oysters were just delightful.

I ordered the carpaccio of coral trout with tomato and lime water vinaigrette. The tomato and lime water vinaigrette gave it a nice kick and tang. This dish was light and refreshing, it was absolutely flavorsome.

For mains, I had the barramundi with witlof, onions and parley butter sauce – the barramundi was fresh, and tender that it broke into pieces in my mouth, the parley butter sauce gave it a nice touch.

Hubby ordered the bread crusted kingfish with piquillo puree and anchovies. This dish was also unbelievably tasty! I am not a big fan of anchovies though, but the bread crusted kingfish was simple, light but yet scrumptious.

We decided to share dessert, as by this time we were both stuffed! We shared the granita with jelly and mango ice cream – this dessert was so so SO good! The combination of the granita, jelly and mango ice cream was so refreshing and divine.

It was a great meal for a special occasion. A great place to take your loved ones, or if you simply just want to have a night out with friends.
