Romankan Yokohama @ iSquare

If you adore katsu, this is definitely the place to go. Although, there are many of them around in Hong Kong you are bound to find a good katsu if this one doesn’t tickle your fancy – Hip Katsu and Butagumi Tonkatsu to name a few.

This place was recommended by a fellow foodie / friend (@jasonbonvivant) and came here with a friend as we were shopping at TST. It’s a very casual dining place, very small and some would say cozy but some would say overly too compressed!

Like Butagumi Tonkatsu, I was given mortar and pestle with toasted sesame seeds. The aroma of the sesame seeds was divine – I started eating the seeds on its own!

We ordered the eggplant and it was so disappointing – not what I expected. I was hoping for a grilled eggplant with miso paste, however, it was boiled and the eggplant weren’t cooked properly. It was slightly hard and tasteless – such a disappointment!

We both ordered the pork cutlet and tempura set lunch – the batter was light and definitely crunchy and was not greasy or sickly.

The prawns were fresh and tasty, the pork was tender, however, a little ‘skinny’ for my liking – the meat was not thick enough. The set lunch came with miso soup and cabbage – the cabbage I thought was a little dry but then again, I like my cabbage cooked so didn’t really appreciate the non-cooked cabbage.

All in all, I think I prefer Butagumi Tonkatsu. I have yet to try Hip Katsu but there is always a humongous line – not sure if that’s a sign of good things!
