Disappointing lunch @ Gourmet Burger Union

It’s funny how we can all crave for the same thing at the same time. I can’t remember what triggered it, but the troops were ALL craving for burgers! D suggested the Gourmet Burger Union (‘GBU’). I have walked pass this place several times whenever I am in central but have never had the time to try it out.

GBU offers a build your own burger option in addition to their signature varieties. There were TOO many options for my brain to comprehend that day, so instead of creating my own, I opted for one of their signature burgers.

To this day, I don’t remember what the name of my burger is. The only thing I remember is that it had aioli. ‘It had me at aioli’ – I didn’t even bother to look at anything else. My burger consisted of beef patty, tomato, lettuce, onions, mushroom and most importantly – aioli. The beef patty was tender and juicy. The only downfall is that the bun wasn’t toasted – I think it would have been ‘better’ if it was toasted. The overall burger wasn’t too bad, but I wouldn’t say that it was the best burger I have ever had.

J and D had the southern burger, it had everything I had plus cheese and chili. Both said patty was good but overall so so.

I think from memory G had the Italian burger. It pretty much only had beef patty, onion, lettuce and mayonnaise. I don’t think G enjoyed the burger. I don’t think it was just the burger that she didn’t enjoy but the overall experience.

The problem with GBU is that the service is quite slow. For one, both G and J had to wait quite a while to order. Then to make matters worse, there were only ONE chef! ONE! And our burgers did take a good 30 mins. We were ALL starving, so that really didn’t help.

The troops thought their burgers were so so – J prefers the bun toasted, I can’t agree with him more. G thought Morsleys (read review here) is better, and again I have to agree with her. The only thing I liked about my burger was the aioli!

Service was seriously slow. Personally, I still prefer either McSorley or the Big Bite (read review here).

Although it was a slightly disappointing lunch, we had a great time catching up and as always, am looking forward to the next lunch!
