Vietnamese Pork Roll @ Hong Ha

I was trying to be healthy, and thought I would order a salad.. I don’t eat a lot of salad in Hong Kong and thought I would make it up here in Sydney. Ordered a SMALL salad from Chifley which seriously did not make a dent in my hunger. Imagine a bottomless pit, the small salad didn’t even touch the bottom of that pit! It was seriously unsatisfying. SO unsatisfying that I had to get something else, something more filling and I thought about my cravings for a ‘good’ pork roll!

Red Roll, created by Hong Ha in a little bakery in Mascot in 1986 – it draws its inspiration from a fusion of Eastern and Western flavours and cuisine. Every Red Roll you purchase is made to order, using fresh and tasty ingredients on a super crunchy bread roll, baked daily on their premises.

For those who have never had a pork roll before.. it consists of the following:

  • Fresh Chili
  • Crusty bread
  • Liver pate
  • Mayonnaise
  • Fish sauce
  • Fresh coriander
  • Julienned carrot
  • Pork meat
  • Cucumber

A ‘good’ pork roll is hard to find in the city of Sydney. I have had some pretty crappy ones, but when Red Roll opened in Wynyard (2 mins walk from office in Sydney) – I no longer had to go to Cabramatta or Flemington to get them. I admit though, the pork roll in Wynyard is pricey!!! At AUD6.50 a pop, it doesn’t get any more expensive than this. I can get a pork roll in Eastwood for about AUD3.50 but seriously – it doesn’t taste as good as this one. The original one from Cabramatta is still the best, but this one is ranked up there also.

The bread was unbelievably fresh (which is definitely important) and all ingredients were fresh. I asked for extra chili and it was indeed extra ‘hot’ (spicy).

This definitely satisfied my cravings for a Vietnamese pork roll and satisfied my hunger. I was feeling a lot better, a lot more chirpier and had the energy to work! I don’t think I will be getting a ‘small’ salad anymore, it really was very unsatisfying!

I was brought up in Mascot, the place has dropped its standards from the 90so. Saw a disgusting email where there was a bug in there rolls, so much for the freshness. They have been fined by the Authorities and would not go back there.
