Breakfast at Gnome Cafe, Surry Hills

There is really no shortage of cafes in Surry Hills – it is one of the many reasons why I love Surry Hills. Located on the corner of Crown Street and Davies Street, this little cute café is always busy. I was here one early morning with B, so thankfully we didn’t really have to wait at all!

The coffee was so so I thought – too bitter for my liking! One could say I could put sugar, but I don’t particularly like my coffee sweet. We were slightly disappointed as we have heard great things about the coffee here.

B opted for muesli – green apple and dried muscatel served over apple juice with fresh kiwifruit. A bowl of ‘soup’ was presented – it was different but it was absolutely tasty! The muesli was soaked in apple juice, giving it that nice apple flavour. It was moist and the yogurt was a great complement. B thought it would have been better if it was served with fresh fruits instead of just kiwifruit. Nevertheless, she really did enjoy it.

Here is a close up of the muesli soaked in apple juice.

I ordered the breakfast board – boiled egg, ham, tomato, avocado and ricotta cheese, served with toast. The egg was cold which was a little surprising but the ham was salty and delicious. The avocado, tomato and ricotta cheese was a great accompaniment. It was a relatively healthy breakfast, which was filling, and awesomely good.

In the hour or so that we were there, B and I noticed how many people came in and out of this café to buy coffee. They had some outstanding looking muffins and cupcakes. I was tempted, but remembered that dress that I just got altered for my brother’s wedding so declined this time round. Will definitely be back for a muffin and coffee!

I remember coming here earlier in the month for a quick bite. I was running some errands and wanted something quick to eat. Ordered the salami salami with onion, capers, pesto, roast tomatoes, and rocket served on fresh baguette and it was fantastic! The bread was fresh and crunchy. The salami was hot and slightly fatty which was delicious and the roast tomatoes, pesto was a great complement. It was messy and my theory of the messier the burger the better it tastes does apply with sandwiches! It was awesomely good and bursting with different flavours.

As always, it was great catching up with B and I look forward to our next catch up!

The gnome café is a lovely little café. The staffs are friendly and service great. Menu is a little limited, but food is good!
