Cafe Sopra, Waterloo

I was catching up with a friend for lunch, he wanted somewhere out of the city and suggested Café Sopra at Waterloo. I haven’t been to the Waterloo café, but have been to the Potts Point branch a couple of times now. Café Sopra can be found upstairs of the famous Italian groceries, Fratelli Fresh. Owned by Barry MacDonald and is Sydney’s leading providore, they sell some of the finest produce from vegetables, olive oils, cheeses and many more.

It was a weekday, rocked up a little bit before noon and the place was relatively empty so picked the best sit in the house i.e. near the menu as I am blind as a bat! The menu can be found at the front of the café, scrawled on the blackboard which took up most of the wall.

My friend, S, rocked up shortly after and he was ravenous. We started with the zucchini flowers. I think from memory they were stuffed with prawns and topped with parmesan. I LOVE zucchini flowers, it was lightly battered, crispy and  superb. It was absolutely tasty and great starter!

S wanted the chicken liver pate which was served with salad and toasted foccacia. The pate was rich, creamy and full of flavour. I really like chicken liver pate so this was a win win for me. The salad was refreshing, but the pate was excellent.

I couldn’t go pass the proscuitto and fig salad – I have been going through a fig phase and if its on the menu, will order it. The proscuitto was sweet, lightly salty and deliciously, the figs were fresh and a wonderful complement. I really enjoyed the salad – it was refreshingly light and truly hit the spot.

S was getting stuffed by this stage – he ate most of the pate but still managed to demolish his beef ragu. The beef was tender and succulent and the pasta al dente was tremendous. This would be the perfect hearty meal on a cold day!

I have heard wonderful things about their banoffee pie but was too full. Deliciously stuffed we waddled back to the car. However, will definitely be back for the banoffee pie and their dessert selection.

I really enjoyed my meal at café sopra. The food was generous, hearty and scrumptious. Service friendly and prices are reasonable – from memory bill came to about $60 – $70. The place did get extremely busy after about 12.30pm, come early to avoid the queues.

    I’ve been here a couple of times and love it for the setting as well as the food. Had the zucchini flowers as well the last time, but I think ours were stuffed with a 4 cheese combination.

      @mademoiselle: i dont think it was 4 cheese combo but then again, i could be wrong. have eaten a few zucchini flowers that week!

    Mmmm, everything looks so good there. I’ve only been to Fratelli Fresh once and I didn’t even realise there was a cafe upstairs.
