Ramen and Japanese Curry at Menya, Sydney

I have heard wonderful things about this place from my fellow food lover friend, C. He comes and eats here at least once a week. Menya Noodle Bar is hidden away under the BT Tower on the corner of Market and Kent Street, just behind the Shelbourne Hotel. It gets ridiculously busy at lunch time and we made sure we got there just a little after midday.

As expected, 12.05pm, there were a queue of people outside and the place was packed! However, turnover is quick, you order at the counter, seated and then food arrives in no more than 10 mins or so.

Here’s a little tip on how to order your ramen.

The house specialty is ramen with different delicious options. I wasn’t up for ramen; I have been craving Japanese curry since my last visit to Japan – it’s my winter comfort food.

I couldn’t go past the Menya Curry & tori kara-age (deep fried chicken) ($11.90). Four chicken kara-age with rice served on a pool of Japanese curry. The chicken kara-age was excellent, tender, succulent and absolutely delightful. The curry I enjoyed immensely – thick, creamy with shredded beef. I could have definitely done with more chicken though! However, it was definitely the perfect winter comfort food for me.

C on the other hand, opted for tori kara-age ramen (deep fried chicken) in miso ($11.90). The soup I thought was a little rich but wonderful. However, the noodles were cooked to perfection and was surprisingly good. C inhaled this, so I can safely assume that he enjoyed it!

This definitely won’t be the last time I visit Menya. Next time, I’ll have to try the tonkotsu – their rich collagen stock made by simmering pork bones for at least 8 hours! I wonder if it will be good as Gumshara? I also noticed that they had char-siu ramen!!!! There will be a next time!

I won’t have to rush to Chinatown for my ramen or curry fix anymore! Can’t believe it has taken me this long to visit Menya. Service was efficient, we were done within 20 – 30 mins! Takeaway is also available if you don’t want to dine or if queues are too long.

I didn’t even know this place existed…so many Menya’s and Mappen’s floating around that I’m getting so confused.

I was confused at first too until I went – two separate different place with similar name. If you like ramen, you should definitely check this out 🙂
