PHD Vietnamese Restaurant, Marrickville

‘The Mother’ was craving for Pho one weekend, but we were both too lazy to drive to Cabramatta or Bankstown, and we were a little tired of going to Flemington so I suggested Marrickville. I knew of one place in Marrickville, Pho Bac Hai Dong (PHD) which is located on the long stretch of Illawarra Road that has pretty good pho. It certainly has been a very long time since my last visit, so long that I didn’t realise that they had moved to a new location, just a few shops down.

“Sup’herb pho” they claim… was it?

I always order my usual, fried chicken with tomato rice. The crispy skin, the tender meat, what’s not to like? It was good, and the tomato rice a wonderful complement.

‘The Mother’ on the other hand, orders his usual, Pho rice noodle soup with special beef combination ($9 / $11). Think ‘The Mother’ opt for the regular size and it was a decent size! He was so hungry he started eating the condiments.

Slices of medium rare beef, with option to add beef brisket, beef balls, tripe or tendon, and in this case ‘the Mother’ didn’t order all of it but just tripe. The soup I thought was ok, a little on the sweet side and slightly oily. We both agreed that it probably wasn’t the best pho that we had. I think ‘The Mother’ still prefers the one at Flemington, or Cabramatta.

I couldn’t help but order the three coloured drink, also known as Che Be Mau in Vietnamese, which consists of a selection of green jelly, red azuki beans, crushed yellow mung beans, coconut milk and lots and lots of crushed ice! Again not the best I have had, the beans were a little too starchy making me feel very sickly.

‘The Mother’ ordered the Vietnamese coffee, I am not usually a fan but ‘The Mother’ certainly enjoyed it.

Overall I thought it was ok, I really liked my fried chicken with tomato rice, but you can’t really get that wrong unless you over/under cook the fried chicken. The pho I have to admit was a little ordinary, think ‘The Mother’ wasn’t too impressed, so he is still craving for ‘good’ pho!

Service minimal, everything inside was red, making the photos very ‘red’ looking.

Still on the hunt for good pho, that’s not as far as Cabramatta or Bankstown!

I love this place! The pho is amazing! I’ve been a fan for years and will keep comming back! The lines are crazy most of time but the wait is well worth it! The pho is definately a 10/10 for me!!
