Lupa, Central, Hong Kong
Lupa is a newly opened restaurant by celebrity chef Mario Batali and his business partner Joe Bastianich. They have worked together in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Singapore and I was very much looking forward to dining here. The décor is very elegant, modern and concise. There’s an outdoor terrace for a more casual dinner where you can order drinks and pizzas – it would be perfect for a warm summery day.
I was catching up with a friend who was stopping by Hong Kong on her way to London and suggested this place. For lunch, diners have the option of having the chef’s buffet which consists of a selection of vegetables, seafood, Italian salami, bread, green salads and dessert for HKD168. You can then add the buffet selection with either soup, primi or pizze or secondi at extra costs.
We started with complimentary focaccia which was served warm and with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Both M and I weren’t overly hungry so we thought we would go a la carte. I couldn’t go pass the crispy duck with salsify and saba (confit half duck with grape vinaigrette, HKD188). The duck was served with Saba – reduced and sweet grape juice which was light and refreshing. The duck had a nice crispy skin and the meat was tender. I have to say, it was better than I had anticipated.
M ordered the grilled radicchio with scamorza (HKD98) – loved the scamorza, it was bitter but tasty.
She also ordered the marinated shrimp (HKD118) which I didn’t have but she did inform me that it was quite delicious.
For dessert, thought we would share the Apricot torta (HKD88) – apricot tart with apricot sorbet and this was absolutely delicious. The apricot tart was light with chunks of fresh apricots, and the sorbet, sweet and refreshing.
I have heard that service has been bad, but we didn’t have any issues that day, thought it was good. Food overall wasn’t too bad. Will definitely try the lunch buffet one day when I am hungrier.
