Fook Yuen, Chatwood

It’s definitely been a VERY long time since I have been to Fook Yuen. Fook Yuen has been around for as long as I remember, even when I used to work in Chatswood which was at least 10 years ago! Fook Yuen can be found on Help Street, just near the station. The restaurant was relatively big, and it was quite a busy evening especially on a week night. We were here for Dragon’s birthday, it was more for the adults than anyone else really. I left all the ordering to ‘The Mother’, which is VERY RARE! However, I was pleasantly surprised how well he ordered – again VERY RARE!

We started with free pork soup – clear broth of pork bones which was a tad on the salty side for me.

The pipis in XO sauce was a hit – I didn’t have any as I am still not eating shell fish but my fellow diners absolutely loved it. Full of flavour, and the chili gave it a nice kick.

The black pepper stir fried beef was wonderful. Tender chunks of beef with lots of black pepper, mushroom and sugar snap peas – one of my favourites!

I can never say no to sweet and sour pork and I have to admit, it was good! Tender pork and they went like hotcakes – had to be very quick – we are all pork lovers.

The tofu hot pot with mushroom and vegetables was simple and hearty.

King prawns with chili were another favourite amongst the diners. Plump and juicy prawns, the chili were a wonderful complement.

I was looking forward to the fried eggplant, took one bite and realised that it had prawn paste at the bottom. It was good though, the eggplant was soft and had the right amount of batter.

I was getting full by this stage but couldn’t resist having some of the crispy chicken. We all enjoyed the crispy skin and tender chicken meat.

Dessert was red bean soup and a plate of biscuits. We also had a cake for Dragon – I was STUFFED and ready to roll home.

Service was good, food was surprisingly good! Much better than I had anticipated or remembered. I have to admit, ‘The Mother’ really ordered well! It was nothing fancy but everything we had was good and delicious.

Happy Birthday once again my sweet Dragon! Love you to bits!

Looks like a hearty Chinese feed. As you said it was nothing special but sounds like everyone walked out happy 🙂
As mediocre as sweet and sour pork is, I have such a soft spot for it!!

This is the regular spot for our family dinners for ANY occasion! MIL loves it here and has been eating here for close to 20 years haha. Seriously, almost had my wedding banquet here but, alas, they were already booked with another wedding the same night.
