One thing I love about work is the social aspect of lunch. We go out for lunch about 3 – 4 times a week together, which is good but also bad at the same time. Bad as I don’t end up going to the gym and instead indulge in delicious food and fall into food coma in the afternoon. Like I mentioned earlier, there is never a shortage of restaurants in Central which I love! The food ranges from dai pai dongs – open-air food stall which is very popular in Hong Kong to cafes to fancy restaurants.
We have wanted to go to dai pai dongs for a while now, so colleague suggested we go to Shing Kee, which can be found on Stanley street. Shing Kee is your typical dai pai dongs – no service, no décor, but food is fantastic at excellent prices! It was packed for lunch, we came relatively early and we took the last table. We left all the ordering to our colleague, all I wanted was some pork and fish.
Started with calamari – which is pan fried with no batter and served with jalapenos. The calamari were tender with that wok smell and the jalapenos a wonderful complement.
The mix hot pot of beef, chicken and pork was good.
I couldn’t stop eating the sweet and sour pork – the pork was tender, batter just right and the sauce wasn’t sickly sweet.
The steamed fish wasn’t what I expected, I had expected a whole fish but this was part of it and it was steamed to perfection. The sauce was a little salty but the fish, fresh and delicious.
Last but not least, steamed vegetables.
Service minimal but food is actually good! I would definitely like to try everything on the menu! They do have English menu which is good! Would definitely come back for dinner, service is quite quick, but if you hate waiting, then I’d recommend going early!
