Hunan Garden, Taikoo Shing, Hong Kong

Sorry for the lack of post. Hope you all had an awesome Easter Break! We certainly did – my family is in town and we have been taking them out sightseeing and eating! It has been good having them, I have truly missed having them around and looking forward to seeing them again in Sydney in July – can’t wait!

I always enjoy catching up with the auditor, I have mentioned her a couple of times on this blog – one of my dearest high school friend. She has definitely helped me transitioned in Hong Kong, and I am forever grateful for her endless support.

Hunan Garden can be found in City Plaza 3 in Taikoo Shing. The restaurant is relatively big, and the menu vast – took us a while to decide what we wanted! Started with crispy chicken with crispy garlic – this was definitely Dragon’s favourite dish! The crispy skin, succulent meat – it was quite tasty and no doubt Dragon ate at least half of it on her own!

‘The Mother’ and the auditor wanted the spicy szechuan fish – I could smell the chili and they both definitely enjoyed it.

I have been craving good xiao long bao and although it wasn’t as good as Din Tai Fung or Paradise Dynasty, it definitely hit the spot.

Last but not least, fatty pork! oh my i was so looking forward to this dish, however, was slightly disappointed. The meat itself could have definitely been more tender and I have to say, mum’s version is infinitely better!

The watercress was simple and delicious. I love the colours of the vegetables.

For dessert we ordered mango sago pomelo and these pear shaped desserts which had red bean filling inside. It was ok I thought, nothing special. The mango sago pomelo was pretty decent but then again, you really can’t get that wrong can you?

Service was friendly and polite and food was pretty decent I thought. Will definitely come back and try their other dishes

The one thing I love about Taikoo Shing is that there are a lot of restaurants nearby, the bad thing are that most of the restaurants are chains and not all of them are that fantastic! So even though there are a lot of restaurants to choose from, we still tend to go to Tin Hau, Tai Hang, or even Causeway Bay to eat. It was pouring one weekend, and thought we would stay in the area and try one of the restaurants in City Plaza. One of them being Wang Jia Sha, a Shanghainese restaurant.

The restaurant was quite big and there are four branches across Hong Kong. ‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the xiao long bao, it was a decent size, bigger than the ones you get at Din Tai Fung or Crystal Jade. I thought the skin was a bit thick. It’s all about the skin isn’t it? The inside wasn’t too bad but I still prefer the ones at Din Tai Fung, Paradise Dynasty or Crystal Jade.

The sweet and sour pork glistened. It was surprisingly better than I had anticipated. Crunchy and the pork were quite tender.

‘The Mother’ also wanted the pan-fried dumplings, explosives and can burn your mouth if you are not careful. I, unfortunately, burnt my mouth with all the soup inside but it was worth it. This was definitely much better than the xiao long bao.

The smoked duck was a generous serving. I thought the duck meat was too salty, and the duck was a little dry. Had it been tender and less salty, I think it would be a very dish! One of our favourites if it’s done correctly.

Service was polite and friendly. Most of the waitresses kept Dragon entertained which was nice. She did enjoy the pan-fried dumplings, only the bun not the inside unfortunately – more for us I guess.

Food was ok, I think I prefer Crystal Jade or Din Tai Fung.

Feast is the hotel restaurant at Island East which is located in Taikoo Shing. I have been here a couple of times, and have been rather impressed both times.  Not to mention, Island East hotel has a pretty cool rooftop bar called Sugar which is stunning at night.

The restaurant is very spacious and I LOVE the glass windows which gives the restaurant natural light. ‘The Mother’ and I were here for lunch, a very late lunch. There’s buffet or a la carte, and we both opt for the latter. The menu was vast, and it ranges from Asian and Western. You name it, they had it – fried rice, Hainan chicken rice, burgers, salads and many more. We started with some bread – I do love good fresh bread!

‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the Hainan Chicken rice, and it was the MOST EXPENSIVE Hainan Chicken rice he has ever had. The presentation was excellent and it was delicious, however, at HKD200+, I think it was pricey for what it is.

I on the other hand was craving a burger – beef burger with bacon and cheese with salad on the side and fries. The pattie was tender and with melted cheese and bacon, it was a pretty excellent burger and it was cheaper than ‘The Mother’s’ Hainan Chicken rice! It was exactly what I needed that day, and even Dragon has some of the pattie.

We came back here a few weeks later, to try the afternoon tea buffet. Choices of sandwiches, salads, dim sum, waffles and crepes.

The dessert station had a lot of option; unfortunately most of them had nuts in them which were a shame. Probably a good thing, which meant that I couldn’t eat a lot of them!

My first plate consisted of Caesar salad, ham cheese and mustard on focaccia, sundried tomato and tahini on toast, and char siu bau. My second plate was very similar.

‘The Mother’ opt for wonton noodles, which was pretty tasty.

For dessert, I opt for the healthier option of fruits and some bread and butter pudding which I couldn’t resist.

Service was excellent, and food was pretty good. I do however prefer the a la carte menu as I can never eat too much at buffet and feel that I never get my money’s worth. However, in saying that, the buffet was about HKD300 including drinks which wasn’t too bad.

‘The Mother’ definitely enjoyed it, and so did Dragon.

I am truly spoilt for choice when it comes to Japanese restaurant in Taikoo Shing. There are so many that after living here for almost a year I have not gone to every single one! Mind you, some are hidden in the pavilions that I don’t know they exists! Ichikawa however can be found in City Plaza in Taikoo Shing, next to Mc Donalds, there are two locations and the other one is in Kowloon Tong.

‘The Mother’ was craving Japanese. Ichikawa offers diners set menu for lunch, which is quite reasonably priced. With each main dish, we had soup, starters and either rice / noodle.

The Japanese pumpkin soup was good albeit a little too watery for my liking. I do like it quite thick but this was quite flavoursome.

‘The Mother’ opt for some corn soup which I didn’t like but he seemed to have enjoyed it.

The aloe salad was simple but refreshing.

The cold soba was a little salty for my liking but perfect for a warm day.

For mains, I couldn’t go past the grilled angus beef (sliced) in home made sauce. The beef were incredibly tender and I loved the home made sauce.

‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the assorted tempura – the batter was thin and crispy and I couldn’t help but steal a few sweet potato tempura.

On top of everything we had above, we also had some ice cream, mocha ice cream, mango and black sesame – absolutely LOVED black sesame!

We rolled out of the restaurant FULL! Service was friendly, they kept entertaining Dragon whilst I was eating. All the food above was only HKD125, which is quite decent. I have been back a couple more times, not to have the above set lunch but different set lunches and it didn’t disappoint.

I have been to the Central branch many times now. You truly can’t miss it. It is on Wellington Street and there is always a long queue by 12.15pm. However, on this day we went to the Taikoo Branch. I didn’t even know they had one until ‘The Mother’ pointed it out. It was relatively empty when we went. From memory it was the Chinese New Year weekend and everyone were either away or still asleep!

‘The Mother’ really likes this place – he always gets the same thing! Beef pho – he claims that it is the best pho he had in Hong Kong. I beg to differ but then again he is more of a pho expert than I am. I have yet to take him to chom chom so he can’t really make a comparison just yet.

It was certainly a generous serving of beef pho – lots of noodles, and beef. The soup had lot of flavours which was nice.

He was so hungry that he decided to get the banh mi. I’ve not had good banh mi for a while now. Unfortunately the banh mi was pretty ordinary, especially the bread! The filling wasn’t great either which was disappointing. No one does banh mi like Marrickville Banh Mi! HA!

I couldn’t go past braised pork belly in coconut juice. The dish took a while to come out. ‘The Mother’ was done eating his pho before this came out. However, it was definitely worth the wait! Tender, melt in your mouth pork belly – it was delicious and the coconut juice wasn’t over powering.

Service was efficient and quick. It wasn’t busy so we sat there for a while. I know when they are busy, they tend to rush you and leave as soon as you have finished eating. I’ve had the pomelo salad and the skewers and I have to admit it is not bad. Lots of options for everone.

Myung Ga Korean Restaurant, Tai koo Shing, Hong Kong

I love Korean food, I am no connoisseur but have always enjoyed it. I love Madang in Sydney but have yet to find a favourite one in Hong Kong. Myung Ga can be found in Taikoo Shing, just near where I live and I have to say, the food is pretty tasty and reasonably priced also.

Seven different types of balancan – kimchi (which we all loved!), broccoli, greens, pumpkin, chives and a couple more which I can’t remember. Loved the kimchi and pumpkin.

Usually I like to eat Korean bbq, however, with Dragon, it is rather difficult, the smoke, the smell so thought we would order a la carte. We started with the chicken pancake, we would usually order seafood but thought we would try something different. The pancake was deliciously thin with a crispy bottom, and the chicken was a wonderful complement. Something different, as we always get the seafood pancake.

The chicken bimbimbap served in a hot stone pot wasn’t too bad, I definitely had better at some Korean restaurants in Sydney.

Last but not least, beef brisket which was served with radish was absolutely wonderful. The beef brisket were incredibly tender that it just melted in my mouth and a generous serving also!

Overall, the food was pretty good, I am keen to try their other dishes and the Korean BBQ. Will have to go back when there are more than 3 of us!

Part of the Maxim group, this restaurant can be located in Taikoo Shing. I walk past it every day to and from home to the station and have always been intrigued by it. We were catching up with the family, my uncle and aunty and I suggested this place.  Reservations are highly recommended as it was quite busy on Sunday night when we went.

Chiu Chow cuisine is also known as Teochew cuisine which originated from the Chaoshan region in the north-easternmost area of Guangdong province in China.

Chiu Chow food is quite famous for their goose. You can’t really get good goose in Sydney, so this was a must. The goose was extremely tender and succulent, it had the right amount of meat to fat ratio and absolutely incredibly delicious. I am sure ‘the mother’ and I ate most of it – it was SOOOOO good!

Another Chiu Chow dish that I really enjoy is the braised pork belly. Braised for hours until all the sauce is immersed in the meat itself. I have to admit, it was a little fatty but oh so wonderful – beautifully succulent, the family was fighting for every single last piece.

The oyster omelette was good but I have definitely have had better in Singapore. I thought it was a little doughy and the oysters were rather small and not enough of it.

This was probably by far my favourite dish – even ‘The Mother’ who doesn’t like aubergine absolutely loved it! Aubergine with minced pork and a whole heap of chili!

These wontons like dish was actually quite tasty, inside were egg whites with prawns and tofu. It was different but delicious.

We also ordered a side of vegetables.

The tofu was silky smooth – we probably shouldn’t have ordered a plate of this, as below both goose and pork belly there were a mountain of tofu. Luckily we all like tofu!

Service was minimal but good. Food was definitely excellent and price was reasonable. From memory the bill came up to 400HKD which is good. Have not ordered any takeaway yet, but I am sure I will get some goose and aubergine soon.

I have been to a couple Chiu Chow restaurants and I have to say, I am definitely a fan!
