I have to say – Bubba Gump is one of our favourite restaurants – we always tend to visit Bubba Gump whenever there is one in the country we are at. We didn’t know there was one in Hong Kong until our cousins told us. We have been to the one in Bali a couple of times and in San Fran on our last visit there. Its fun and food is not too bad.
It was inspired by the movie Forrest Gump, as most of you know, when Bubba and Forrest wanted to open a shrimp restaurant after fighting the Vietnam war. Bubba Gump is located on top of the Peak tram station and has a superb view of Hong Kong Island. The restaurants have many memorabilia’s of the movie which is fantastic!
For those who have never been to the restaurant – on the table there are 2 signs – run forest run and stop forest stop. If you would like to order, flip the sign to ‘run forest run’ and a waiter / waitress will come to take your order. Once ordering is done, you flip the sign back to ‘stop forest stop’. It is quite a novelty!
The drink menu is quite impressive – with lemonades, cocktails, mocktails and smoothies. I seem to always order the same drink when I go here – which is blueberry speckled lemonade with lots and lots of blueberries! The menu consists of many different types of shrimp dishes – hot and cold, and other seafood dishes as well as non seafood related dish.
Ordered the Accidental Fish and Shrimp – which is broiled mahi mahi over a bed of jasmine rice, topped with grilled shrimp, lemon butter sauce and roma tomatoes. I didn’t want the rice, so asked if I could have for French fries (for Hubby of course!) instead. The fish was fresh and succulent, and the shrimp were tasty! The lemon butter sauce was divine – not to lemony and not too creamy! It was perfect and exactly what I wanted!
Hubby ordered Shrimpin’ Dippin’ Broth – lots of shrimp cooked in a spicy broth served with jasmine rice and French bread for dippin’ – talk about carb overload! I tried a bit of spicy broth – it was tomato based with lots and lots of chilli! It was indeed spicy. It also came with a side of coleslaw which wasn’t too bad (I hate to admit this, but the KFC coleslaw was so much better!)
We were both stuffed for dessert, however, had a quick look at the dessert menu and it certainly did look delicious! It’s a great restaurant to take the family – kids will love this, especially those who have seen and appreciate the movie. Every time I go here, I always end up watching the movie a couple of days later – and indeed I DID!
