Whilst in Bali, we drove past this place many times, the sign of a man with funny looking hair and face that has made me wondered but it wasn’t until this place was recommended that we actually went. ‘Authentic Balinese food’ she claims, and how could we resist?
Don’t be put off by the venue, it is very simple and minimal, no air con, very ‘warung’ style but the food…. is superb! Ayam Betutu Gilimanuk is said to be the best eating spots in Bali due to its special braised chicken and duck.
We started with the bebek betutu gilimanuk (1/2 duck), Balinese braised duck, extremely spicy and mouth watering but incredible! The duck is marinated with garlic, turmeric, shallots, ginger, lemongrass, chilies, bay leaves and kaffir lime leaves. The duck was incredibly tender, that it just fell apart and full of flavour. Our eyes were watering but we couldn’t help but eat more, the sauce was just outstanding.
The bebek goreng (1/2 duck), deep fried duck was also quite tasty. We couldn’t help but dip the duck in the sauce. The duck was so tender, even the bones were tender, but I think we all preferred the bebek betutu gilimanuk.
Similar to the bebek betutu gilimanuk, the ayam betutu gilimanuk was just as good! The sauce, we just couldn’t get enough of it!
Dad opted for the soto ayam – chicken soup with vermicelli and egg. This is one of my favourite dish, the soup was tasty and refreshing. I have grown up with soto ayam and loved it, it didn’t have enough chicken though.
The plecing dengan sambal terasi (boiled veggie with shrimp paste chili sauce), this was quite bitter for my liking and didn’t enjoy it. The chilli was good but not as spicy as the ayam betutu gilimanuk.
Presentation not exactly their strength, but it is not that kind of place. We came here for the food and we weren’t disappointed. From memory, the above costs less than AUD30! We were keen to go back the next day but we ran out of time. Definitely one of the best meal we had in Bali and no doubt we will be back when we are in Bali!

After a couple of days with friends, the Family finally arrived and we decided to have lunch together at Made’s Warung. It’s been a while since my last visit, and this is my sis-in-law, O’s favourite place! Quite a famous restaurant in Bali offering a wide range of local and international cuisine.
There are two branch of Made’s Warung, one in Kuta and one in Seminyak. I was fortunate enough to go to both, I went to Seminyak with the family and my last meal in Bali was also at Made’s Warung which is in Kuta with the cousins. The restaurant in Seminyak is a lot bigger, it even has outdoor seating, we arrived just before rush hour and had no problems waiting for a table. The place was buzzing with diners.
We started with Nasi Campur (Rp 60,000 / AUD 6.84) each restaurant serves Nasi Campur differently. It was quite substantial, consisted of crispy fish, fish crackers, beans, carrots, eggplant, chicken curry, beef rendang, tempeh and lodeh. We ordered two servings of this, as one was not enough. I love Nasi Campur as you get a taste of everything. The rendang was a little disappointing though, it wasn’t as tender as Mum’s but everything on the plate was fantastic! This is pretty much your typical Indonesian meal!
The Nasi Goreng a La Made (Rp 50,000 / AUD 5.70) was a favourite amongst the diners. Served with shredded beef and topped with scrambled egg. It was a little spicy but not spicy enough for all of us.
Fried noodles (Rp 30,000 / AUD 3.42) – egg noodles served with chicken, vegetables and scrambled egg topped with fried onions was probably one of my favourites. I love Indonesian noodles, it was cooked in xiao shing wine, my parent’s weren’t massive fans as Mum doesn’t use a lot of xiao shing wine to cook but I definitely do! More for me I guess.
The Balinese pork sate, which is char grilled with mild Balinese spices was good but not as good as the Javanese sate or those on the streets. I was told that the sate was grilled over charcoal made from dried coconut shells giving it that smoky and slightly charred flavour. It had a nice subtle spice which gave it that extra kick.
The vegetables lumpia (spring roll) (Rp 25,000 / AUD 2.85) was a little disappointing and expensive for what it is! It also took forever to come out – last to be exact, and we were all quite full! It had the crunchy, and crispy but lacked substance!
It was an enjoyable meal with the family, we haven’t seen each other for about 10 days, as both my parents, and my brother and sis-in-law left for their trip before I did! I am realising that as I get older, I do appreciate family holidays more. I definitely look forward to the next one!
Definitely another yummy lunch, authentic Balinese food! I also went to the Kuta branch, we pretty much had ordered the same thing, didn’t take photos though. We had gado-gado also which was fantastic! Can’t get gado-gado as good as that in Sydney at all! And we also had the chicken sate, which I didn’t quite enjoy, prefer the pork sate.
Definitely worth the visit if you are in Bali.

Bebek Bengil is another must go restaurant when in Bali. I made sure I stayed in Ubud for two days so I could tackle all the restaurants in Ubud without hiring a driver and driving 2 hours each way!
Opened in 1990, it serves delicious crispy duck as well as other dishes which you have to order at least one day in advance. Not only that, they also serve Western food which I quickly glanced at. The restaurant is quite big, many ‘huts’ surrounding the paddy field and we were fortunate enough to sit in one of the huts!
My friend, S and I both ordered the Bebek Bengil – Crispy duck (signature dish) (Rp 88,000 / AUD 10.20). The duck is marinated for 36 hours in Indonesian herbs and spices, steamed, and then deep fried to get that crispy, crunchy but yet tender touch. On the menu it told us to ‘use your fingers’ and so we did! The duck was tender, although some parts were a little dry, but the bones were so soft that I couldn’t help but nibble on a couple of them.
We couldn’t help but order a serve of the Chicken Sate (RP 42,000 / AUD 4.85) – it was nice but I don’t think I like Balinese sate as much as I like Javanese sate – there is a difference that’s for sure! The chicken was tender, but the sauce was too coconut-y and definitely not for my liking.
I love the huts, the alfresco dining experience, there was a nice breeze that day, so it wasn’t too hot.
Bebek Bengil is an absolutely beautiful restaurant, love the decor, atmosphere and the friendly service.
A must visit when in Bali! Next time, I will have to call one day in advance for their Balinese Smoked Duck which is served with Balinese sate, and vegetables or the Indonesian Rijstafel! We saw a table ordered the Rijstafel and it looked fantastic!

Babi Guling (suckling pig) is Bali’s famous dish and a must eat. Every street corner and in every village in Bali, there is a babi guling stall. Those who has been to Bali would have heard of Ibu Oka which can be found in Ubud – not the closest place to get too, especially if you are staying in Kuta, as it is a 90 mins drive but well worth it in my opinion!
Ibu Oka can be found in the middle of Ubud town, just near the markets. The place ‘warung’ is small, quite dingy, with outdoor seating as well as indoor. Try and get there early, the place opens at 11 am and by midday it is usually packed with diners.
The menu is quite simple – babi guling and more served in different ways. I couldn’t go past the babi guling special, which is pretty much everything on the one plate or you can have it ‘pisah’, rice and meat separated.
I came here with a couple of friends, and we all ordered the babi guling special. Everything on a plate which includes, pork meat, crispy skin, deep-fried intestines, black pudding and chili vegetable relish served with rice. The pork meat was incredibly succulent and tender, the chili vegetables a wonderful complement. The crispy skin was crunchy, gooey and mouth watering. Unfortunately they were a little stingy on the crispy skin so we all ordered a plate of just crispy skin as one small piece was just NOT enough! I have to say to say though, it was really ‘mantep’ which means it TOTALLY hit the spot!
One can’t go to Indonesia and not have teh botol – bottled tea, which really is sweetened jasmine tea which is served cold.
I caught up with the family a couple of days later and they too wanted to eat babi guling. Since we were staying in Kuta, we really didn’t have time to go all the way to Ubud, so ate locally. I didn’t go to the warung, as I had to get my make up done for my cousins wedding, but my wonderful uncle got me a takeaway which he bought from Warung Pak Ketut Dobiel in Nusa Dua. It was good but I still do prefer Ibu Oka. My uncle also bought us a couple of babi guling from Kuta and Legian for midnight snacks (yes after dinner) but the meat was a tad dry and lacked flavour, the crackle hard and chewy. Still, my favourites are Ibu Oka and Warung Pak Ketut Dobiel.
Can you tell that we are a family who loves pork? To say I OD’ed on pork is an understatement. It was good though and no doubt I will be back when I go back to Bali.
I have to say though, still the BEST suckling pig I have had is at Four in Hand – I am SOOOO looking forward to going back there again soon! The crackling sound of the crispy skin…. it was like music to my ears and the meat, deliciously tender, my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

After a rocky start to Bali, as jetstar cancelled our flight, I was finally off to Bali the next evening. It was a fantastic holiday, I didn’t do a lot of sightseeing this time round, ate well and attended one of the best wedding this year!
The wedding was excellent – venue was AMAZING – St Regis did not disappoint! You see those ‘picture perfect’ wedding in magazines and pamphlets and it was just that. It was picturesque, the food was one of the best I have had and very intimate! Congrats again dear cousin!
Now, the food – where should I start? I will do a separate post for each. I ate my way around Bali in search of the perfect babi guling (suckling pig)! It is their specialty, succulent meat and crispy crackle. Each ‘warung’ (very low-key food stall) serves babi guling differently. I ate babi guling FIVE straight days (and I was in Bali for seven!) completely OD’ed and could not eat babi guling anymore. The best I thought was at Ibu Oka which is in Ubud – it totally hit the spot! Warung Pak Ketut Dobiel in Nusa Dua wasn’t too bad either.
It’s been almost 3 years since my last visit to Bali and I can’t remember the number of times ‘The Mother’ and I have been. I first took ‘The Mother’ to Bali when we first started dating and has fallen in love ever since! He even wanted Bali to be our last honeymoon destination and what a brilliant idea that was after a whirl-wind trip! Swimming in our own private pool, sipping cocktails and eating wonderful food!
The first time I took ‘The Mother’ to Indonesia, I think it was a shock to his system! Bad traffic, bad pollution and a horrendous amount of people – ‘The Mother’ just doesn’t like crowds! Also, it is not the cleanness place, so he had the Indonesian belly! I think the highlight though would be the road trip from Malang to Bali, and stopping mid-way at Gunung Bromo, an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif in East Java Indonesia. My wonderful Aunt and Uncle, took their kids (my cousins) and us and have to say, we had an AWESOME time! The view was just spectacular and we got up at a ridiculous time to watch the sunrise – well worth it!
For those who knows me well, will know that I have created a list of food that I would like to eat. Since I am going to just Bali and not all the food and snacks are the same in Indonesia, I have given that list to my parents and cousins who has outsourced to my aunts and uncle all over Indonesia to buy! God Bless them!
My passticerie cousin is getting married in Bali and I have been looking forward to it since the day she told me! She made my gorgeous wedding cake below – and the figurine too! No dear cousin, I will not be returning the favour and making your wedding cake! BUT I will see you soon.
So… Bali here I come! I am so looking forward to the food, no doubt there will be a lots of food consumed, especially the suckling pig at Ibu Oka. Looking forward to a bit of sun (ok a lot of sun and warm weather!), reading, R&R and catching up with the family.
