Wow, its certainly been a very long time since I last blogged! Things in the household has been quite busy actually. Work, Dragon, work, Dragon and getting sick, hence, there hasn’t been any time for much else. Thought I would go back to the Singapore post, My bro, F was craving some good congee. He took us to Tiong Shian Porridge which specialises in serving porridge / congee and clay pot frogs leg! I didn’t even know this place existed until he brought us there. Apparently one of his friends who lives in Singapore brought him here and he has been coming back ever since!
The specialty is congee and we ordered 3 large bowls of congee – 2 fish and 1 chicken. To be honest, I am no expert in congee and I am not a huge fan as I only eat it when I am sick. I have to admit though, Dragon really enjoyed the chicken congee, it had the right consistency, not too watery like most places I have eaten.
We noticed that a lot of people was ordering the braised bean curd. It was definitely tasty, silky smooth and soft. The sauce was a very wonderful complement to the dish and especially when eaten with congee, it even got the approval from Dragon! We also ordered a side of chicken wings, however, it wasn’t as tasty as from Chomp Chomp.
The dried chili frog leg clay pot was delicious. The sauce had the right amount of sweetness and spiciness and it was surprisingly meaty! We also ordered the clay pot fish and this was everyone’s favourite. The fish had a slightly crisp to it and was extremely tender.
I have to admit, I really enjoyed the congee, even Dragon couldn’t say no!
On a separate day, my dad was craving for some turtle soup. Now I was a little skeptical about turtle soup but I am always up for trying new things. Dad was craving it and F have heard about this place in Singapore called – Ser Seng Herbs Turtle Restaurant. I know what you might think, these turtles are endangered species, but I asked and these turtles are farmed just like cows and chickens.
The menu is quite limited, just steam turtle or mix turtle internal organ soup and steam black chicken soup. I ordered the smallest portion of the turtle soup and steam black chicken soup. I have to say, I wasn’t a huge fan, not something I would order again. The soup was quite herby and the meat, well I wasn’t sure what I was eating. I do enjoy the innards of chicken and what not, but this was a little weird for my liking.
The rest of the crew definitely enjoyed it, and the steam black chicken soup – well, the soup was tasty but black chicken, I ate it after I gave birth to Dragon and till today, I still can not eat it!
One can not go to Singapore without eating an ice cream sandwich – I can’t remember if it’s the same dude, but he is on Orchard Road and he has been there for as long as I can remember. We had the durian one, and my my… BEST!

Sorry for the lack of post, it has been a crazy few weeks and I had the pleasure of going to Singapore for a few days for a wedding and see the family again which was really really nice! Dragon got to see her cousin again, and my goodness, I love how affectionate she is, she would kiss her niece every time she saw her! Sometimes too much that C would be scared of her, look at the expression on her face below – poor C!
I haven’t been to Singapore for a very long time now, 6 – 7 years ago, ‘The Mother’ and I stayed in Singapore for 3 months to find a job, we both didn’t love Singapore and so decided to go back home to Sydney which was one of the best decisions we made! We had fun though in Singapore but I don’t think it is a city for us.
We were in Singapore for about 5 days, managed to stay at Marina Bay Sands for a couple of nights which was uber nice. We didn’t leave Marina Bay at all, even ate at the food court and Din Tai Fung. When the family came, we moved into a serviced apartment and that’s when all the eating started. My dad LOVES Hainan Chicken rice, so a visit to Tian Tian was a must!
Tian Tian is located in Maxwell Road Hawker stall and they even have a restaurant at Joo Chiat Road. The hawker stall was packed when we arrived at 12.30, it took us a good 20 minutes to find a table, and even then it was shared but well worth it! Tian Tian Chicken Rice is one of the most famous chicken rice stalls and surprisingly my parents who come to Singapore frequently has not been. The queue for the chicken rice was horrendously long. We ordered a whole chicken and it was cooked to perfection – tender and succulent, even Dragon wanted more.
The chicken rice was fragrant – it was indeed wonderful and satisfied my cravings. We also ordered a side of vegetables which was good but nothing special, the chicken is definitely my favourite!
Can you believe that I have never been to Chomp Chomp food centre which is located at Kensington Park Road, Serangoon Gardens (nearest MRT station is Serangoon and it is a 10-15 minutes bus ride to reach the food centre). We took a cab and it was only SGD12 if it’s not peak hour. There were so many stalls, we didn’t know where to start!
I ordered some chicken wings from Daily Fresh BBQ Chicken Wings. Each piece of chicken wings is about SGD1.2 and cooked to order. The chicken wings itself was tender and succulent, but felt that the aroma was not strong enough.
I couldn’t go past the pork and chicken satay, minimum order of 10 and my goodness, they definitely satisfied the cravings. The meat was flavourful and tender and definitely one of the best satay I’ve had in a while.
F wanted the bbq stingray, I loved the banana leaf’s fragrance, the skin was crispy and the meat itself was tender and succulent. Dad however thought it tasted like sardines and not sure if he liked it that much.
Oyster omelette is a definite must and a favourite amongst the diners. Eggs, oysters, what’s there not to like?
And also vegetables – the chili really gave it a nice kick!
We enjoyed the meal at Chomp Chomp Food Centre, not sure if we would trek all the way there again though? Especially if Dad thought the stingray tasted like sardines! HAHAHA! They did go to Newtown Circus a few days later and thought the food was better there, I know it is more tourist-y but it was definitely easier to get too.
There’s definitely good food in Singapore and we certainly ate well! I would definitely go back to Tian Tian for that awesome chicken rice.

Wow is it really 2014 already? It seems only yesterday I was writing about 2012 and here I am thinking about what a year 2013 has been. I thought 2012 was the year of travels, 2013 was just the same – I didn’t think we would travel so much with Dragon but being in Hong Kong, it’s so hard not too when everything is so close!
We started the year with a pig feast! My birthday – we went to Fook Lam Moon – a place to be seen apparently, where celebrities go wine and dine! I had one the best suckling pig thus far – it wasn’t cheap but it was definitely fantastic and satisfying! A great way to start the year that’s for sure.
We also went to Doppio Zero in Sheung Wan for bone marrow (my favourite in Hong Kong in 2013!) and steak.
Chinese New Year was a bit late this year I thought, in February. I love Christmas and Chinese New Year – lots of breaks! We were invited to a colleagues house and he had a spit roast – a pig! I have to say, this was also a very good PIG! I couldn’t stop eating the pork, thankfully he had TWO roast porks!
We didn’t start our travels until March where we went to Singapore to meet my brother and sis-in-law who were holidaying there. I fell in love with Paradise Dynasty – a restaurant in Singapore that makes AWESOME xiao long baos! I think it is a lot better than Din Tai Fung.
Ate at Blue Butcher for the most awesome steak – think this is my favourite go to steak restaurant in Hong Kong.
In April we went back to Sydney for Dragon 1st Birthday. I really wanted her to spend her first birthday with family and it was a FANTASTIC event. It’s so good to be with family and friends for a special event!
We hit up a lot of cafes and restaurant, one being Movida – so awesome that they are finally in Sydney!
Loved Kepos – the falafel sandwich is one of the best I have eaten, can’t get that in Hong Kong anywhere unfortunately 😦
We also went for a quick trip to Xiamen late April for ‘The Mother’s cricket tour – yes it was a proper tour where they actually played cricket against another team. Had some fantastic street food – stinky tofu how much I love you and lots of steamed buns!
We went to Penang for ‘The Mother’s’ birthday in July – long weekend and hung out by the pool pretty much every day. Traveling with Dragon is definitely different. We no longer pack our days with sight seeings and events, it revolves around Dragon’s nap time – she dictates our schedules! Had a great meal at Perut Rumah for authentic nyonya food.
We also went to Joo Hooi cafe for the best CKT I have eaten and cendol!
Had snake soup for the first time ever – yes it has taken me that long to check out Ser Wong Fun and it did not disappoint!
I went back to Sydney in August for a quick work trip and because it was my niece’s one month celebration! Couldn’t miss that! I was also craving Korean Fried Chicken – can you believe I have yet to find one in Hong Kong. Went to Red Pepper in Strathfield but my favourite is still NaruOne.
Had an awesome burger at Mary’s. I have to say though, my favourite burger in Sydney is still Dan Hong’s burger which can be found at the Fish Place – shame on me for not visiting yet!
Finally got to try the famous Devon Cafe – I can see why people are in love with this place! I love the cafe scene in Sydney.
Ate at Fu Sing Shark Fin Restaurant and had their awesome char siu – oh how i love you!
In November I was back in Sydney again for a whirl wind trip and it was so nice to see family and friends again – i have truly missed them! Ate well as always. Tried Three Williams which has to be one of my favourite cafes in Sydney – love the space and the food was fantastic.
Dragon and I then went to meet ‘The Mother’ in Helsinki after his dog sledding boys trip. I haven’t had Chinese food for 2 weeks and was DYING for some. Thanks to Dan Hong for connecting me to someone who lived in Helsinki and told me about this place, Gaijin – the pork belly was TO DIE FOR! (post to come! Sorry!)
Went to Juuri also which was nice – I couldn’t eat a lot of the seafood dishes and the chef was very accommodating which is nice. (post to come). Loved this mushroom dish…
We then went to Prague for 4 days – fell in love with the city! It’s so beautiful, I could definitely live there! (posts on all food to come!)
I’ve had my fare share of fried chicken, bone marrow and steak this year! Still on the hunt for the best fried chicken in Hong Kong – they don’t have Korean Fried Chicken!!!! and you can never have enough bone marrow and steak! Here are some memorable ones
I’ve lost count the number of times I have gone to Yat Lok for goose in 2013 – it is my favourite lunch spot! Their char siu is pretty tasty also.
Having Dragon has made it a bit difficult to eat out all the time, as I would rather go home after work to be with her. Going to fine dining restaurants with her at this age (20 months) is so not enjoyable! She can’t sit still long enough and cause she is so active, i really don’t enjoy my meal. I eat so quickly so that she doesn’t get bored. However, in saying that, I wouldn’t change a thing!
Regardless, it has been a fantastic year, I have eaten quite a fair bit (still a lot more of yummy eats to come!), traveled quite a fair bit. I doubt we would be doing that much travel next year, Dragon is turning 2 and well…we actually have to start paying her air fares! LOL

I first heard about Paradise Dynasty whilst in meetings. My fellow colleagues claim that it was better than Din Tai Fung and what is this colourful xiao long bao they were talking about? I had to go and check it out myself! When I told ‘The Mother’ he couldn’t believe it as he is a Din Tai Fung FAN!
Paradise Dynasty has been around for a while now, and is one of the newer ventures of the Taste Paradise Group and is located on Ion Orchard on level 4. Unfortunately you can’t make a reservation but thankfully we didn’t have to wait for long. We opted to sit outside and at the time we thought it was a great idea but the humidity got to us all including Dragon!
The menu is vast, and quite similar to Din Tai Fung. They also have 18 different types of silky handmade La Mian as well as Shanghainese dim sum, hot and cold appetisers and a variety of fried meat, seafood, vegetables and rice dishes.
We couldn’t go past the 8 different colours of Xiao Long Bao. The flavours are original, garlic, ginseng, foie gras, black truffle, cheese, crab roe and Szechuan. We got two servings of this, we just couldn’t resist. I tried the cheese, ginseng and Szechuan and my goodness – they were fantastic!! I loved the cheese and Szechuan dumplings!
These pan fried pork and vegetables dumplings were seriously tasty.
I love these hazardous dumplings – juicy and the bun was soft and fluffy.
I couldn’t go past the cold tofu which was seriously silky and the thousand year old egg was a wonderful complement.
Not to mention these braised pork belly! Oh my – look how they glistened! Tender and succulent.
The water spinach vegetables were simple but excellent.
The fried rice had a really nice aroma and flavour.
One of the la mians. From memory, these were minced pork with a hint of chili and they were wonderful, full of flavours.
Service efficient and food delicious!
Verdict? The xiao long bau were DEFINITELY and infinitely better than Din Tai Fung! I can’t wait to go back and try more dishes! If you were wondering how many people were eating at this lunch? Only four! Yes we ordered a lot and they were worth it!

This restaurant requires no introduction. No Signboard first opened back in 1970s, where they started their stall at the Mattar Road Hawker Centre, and now they have four branches in Singapore, one in Hong Kong, Indonesia and Macau.
They are famous for the crabs – the white pepper sauce or the chili sauce. We were here for one thing, and one thing only – CRAB! Unfortunately I can’t have any of it and I told ‘The Mother’ this prior to making the reservation but he still insisted that we go!
‘The Mother’ has been craving crabs and there was nothing stopping him that evening. He ordered the smallest possible crab, which was 1.8kg with chili sauce. It was still quite a large serving and yes.. he ate it all. We noticed other diners and people watching us, well watching ‘The Mother’ eating his crab! He was definitely enjoying it!
You can’t order crab and not have fried bread – mantou. These baby fried bread were delicious, even when eaten in its own!
I ordered the sweet and sour pork. It was good but probably should have ordered the pork ribs instead!
The spinach in clear broth was a winner for both of us. Lots of flavour and excellent.
The food here is so much better than the one in Hong Kong. It had a lot more variety also which I enjoyed! As for the crab, I wouldn’t be able to tell you but ‘the Mother’ said it was ‘frigging delicious’
Service was efficient and food came out relatively quickly.

‘The Mother’, Dragon and I went to Singapore for a quick weekend trip. I wanted to catch up with my brother who was there for a wedding and of course for me to eat also! I didn’t get to eat as much as I’d like too or could have but did manage to eat a few snacks and went to a few restaurants.
We landed in Singapore about 1pm and by the time we got to the hotel it was almost 2.30pm so thought we’d check out Paragon mall and see if they have any good restaurant. I have been craving Indonesian food – think a trip back is definitely required! I suggested Tambuah Mas which is located in the basement.
I couldn’t go past the chicken satay, thankfully the peanut sauce was served separately. The chicken weren’t as tender as I had hoped but I do like the charcoal taste and the sauce – kecap manis wasn’t overly powering.
I also ordered oxtail soup – my favourite! It was about 6SGD which is reasonably cheap but quite exy for Indonesian standard. The soup was delicious with lots of flavours and the oxtail was incredible tender! It was pretty damn tasty I have to say and definitely could have had more!
‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the daily special which was mie rebus in clear both. It didn’t look very Indonesian but he seemed to have enjoyed it.
The es teler – coconut milk, young coconut, jack fruit and avocado was a must order.
‘The Mother’ had the es cendol which he thoroughly enjoyed – it was a little too sweet for my liking but he definitely enjoyed it!
Service was efficient and food was quite tasty and authentic. Did see other diners ordering different dishes and it looked fantastic! Will definitely be back next time.
