Mister Gee Burger Truck, Leichhardt

I have seen so many pictures of Mister Gee’s Burger on my feed that I had to check it out for myself on my trip to Sydney. The menu is minimal, burger, french fries and a milk shake. The burger menu changes weekly, and on the night we went it was serving the fat boy burger, chili cheese fries and baklava shake.

The queue when we rocked up was quite long, thing we waited a good 30 – 40 mins for our burger and seating is minimal, however, we were lucky enough to have found a seating. Majority of the people had takeaway, but I can’t imagine driving back 30 mins and eating a soggy burger! I had originally thought about eating in the car also, but with kids, I don’t think that would be very comfortable!

The Fat Boy Burger – Oh my my… beef patty, melted jack cheese, oak leaf lettuce, pickled cabbage some sauce which I couldn’t figure out what and bacon jam all in a soft light brioche bun. The patty was cooked well-done (i would have preferred it medium rare but i would assume it would be difficult to have it cooked different ways!), the pickled cabbage i love, it really gave it that added sour flavour and the caramelised bacon was sweet and smokey which was a wonderful addition to the burger. It was messy, it was big, and it was frigging delicious!!! Burger cravings SATISFIED!

The chili and cheese fries was also excellent, my SiL and I couldn’t stop eating it, and neither did our kids! They absolutely loved the fries.

The baklava shake was a little on the sweet side for me, but my brother, F, really enjoyed it!

Glad to have tried this burger, it was definitely tasty and those chili and cheese fries were excellent! Would I wait again for 30 – 40 mins? Probably not, but that’s just me, however, I wouldn’t mind dropping by after a big night out and need some grease!

Burger Project, Sydney

There’s been a lot of hype about this burger joint Burger Project, I was also invited to opening night, unfortunately I was in Hong Kong and wasn’t going to fly down for it! I did manage to eat here on my last visit, my brother F, has been a couple of times and was raving about it! Now, I have had heard mix reviews about this place, so didn’t really have high expectations, especially since I have eaten Neil Perry’s burger at Rockpool Bar and Grill.

Burger Project is the new project by Neil Berry, Trish Richards and David Doyle – the people behind the Rockpool Group. Open for lunch and dinner, Burger Project can be found in World Square, next to Din Tai Fung – the restaurant was bigger than expected. We arrived on Sunday at 1.30pm and the place was buzzing, but thankfully we found a seat outside. There’s no table service, you order at the counter, get a device that buzzes and when once your order is ready, the device will buzz and you pick up your food at the counter.

My brother F insisted that we order the spicy pork belly (AUD9.90) – crispy free range pork belly, salted chilli, pickles, pickled slaw and lettuce and WOW! It did not disappoint. Generous pieces of pork belly and crackle, the pickled slaw was a wonderful complement. The bun was surprisingly not bad. We really enjoyed this.

2014-11-16 10.52.17-2

I wanted to try the burger in a bowl, same price with no buns but extra lettuce. I opt for the spicy pork belly and it did not disappoint. the salted chili and slaw was seriously good!

2014-11-16 10.50.04

F also ordered the double (AUD12.90) – 2x grass fed beef, cheese, onion, pickles, tomato, lettuce and secret sauce. (not the best picture below) – it was better than I had anticipated (considering i had very low expectations!), the beef was tender, and who can say no to cheese and pickles in a burger? the bun was better than I anticipated but definitely not the best.

2014-11-16 10.50.22

We also ordered the a crispy hot wing (AUD3.50 each) for Dragon, it wasn’t the best chicken wing i’ve had but Dragon seemed to have enjoyed it. We also had the house made chips thrice cooked (AUD4.90) – again not the best I thought, it was cooked to a crisp! Double cooked probably would have sufficed!

Overall I really enjoyed the spicy pork belly, but the beef burger itself I thought was ok. seriously, for me, nothing beats Dan Hong’s burger – that is still my favourite burger ever! We waited 30 minutes for our food, for a hungry child that’s a very long time. Would i go back again? maybe for the spicy pork belly, I know my parents have!

The Butchers Club Burgers, Wan Chai

I am always on the hunt for good burgers. The Butchers Club Burgers is the new addition of burger joints in Wan Chai – there’s Beef and Liberty, CaliBurger, Burger King, and Ted’s Lookout – a lot of options if you are in the area. The Butchers Club Burgers can be found on Landale Street, it is not a big place, but turnover is quite quick

BD-001

The Butchers Cub’s uses dry-aged black ague beef from New South Wales, Australia, however, patties are minced fresh to order in front of the customer before being thrown back to the kitchen and grilled to the customer’s requested ‘doneness’. We were here on Sunday afternoon, just a little after midday and the place was pumping already – you order at the counter, find a table and food will be served to your table.

The menu simple – burgers and fries. On the menu it only says BURGER (HKD100) which are served on a freshly baked floured scotch bap and topped with mature cheddar cheese, glazed bacon, tomatoes, pickles and onion spread. It isn’t the sexiest looking burger but it was pretty tasty. The pattie was saltier than expected but it was cooked well. I especially loved the spicy mayo and cheese and the Damper bun was pretty decent.

Now the duck fat fries (HKD20) – yum! Thought the fries could be a little bit more crispier but it was pretty tasty. Dragon definitely enjoyed it – pretty sure she had more than either of us!

BD_chips

Service was quick and efficient, it was hard eating with Dragon though as there high stools and trying to juggle her and camera was too difficult hence photos with the iPhone! I definitely want to come back and try the Double Happiness – double dry-aged Australian beef patties, with double cheese, and 2 grilled cheese sandwiches holding it together… yum!! We did see someone order one and ‘The Mother’ almost had a heart attack! hehehehe

The Chop House, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

The Chophouse is a new venture by the Woollomoollo group, which can be found on Tung Lung Street in Soundwill Plaza – there’s actually a whole building of new restaurants including Jamie’s which should open in the summer. I had originally thought that The Chop house is from Sydney, but apparently, there is a gastropub in Singapore also called The Chop House. The menu is quite similar, offering diners burgers, steaks, and lots of different types of beers and wine. There’s also a beer tap on some of the benches which looked uber cool – customers just need to buy a special card ($300) to activate their device and they can serve themselves brews until the money runs out. The restaurant is quite spacious and there is also an outdoor area which is great for the summer. I love the relaxing vibe and it’s great for catching up with friends over beer and burgers.

P1300830

We started with these Japanese beef – cooked medium rare, the sauce was delicious, a little spicy which gave it a nice kick.

P1300839

I couldn’t go past the beef burger with cheese and bacon – sounds simple enough right? It was excellent, potentially my favourite burger in Hong Kong thus far – better than Beef and Liberty in my humble opinion. The beef was juicy and tender, the cheese was perfect and the bacon was definitely a wonderful addition.

P1300845

On top of that, it was served with these potato gems! I haven’t had these in years, and they were crunchy on the outside and deliciously soft on the inside. Even Dragon couldn’t resist.

IMG_0690[1]

‘The Mother’ whenever he sees turkey sandwich he would order it. I am not sure why because surely my turkey sandwiches are better? The turkey sandwich was served with guacamole and salad – it was nice but no thing special I thought but then again, I am not big on turkey sandwiches.

P1300843

The steak looks pretty decent – will definitely come back to try. I am not missing the Chophouse in Sydney – especially the pork and not to mention the chocolate!

Beef & Liberty, Admiralty, Hong Kong

I am on the hunt for the best burger in Hong Kong and I may have found it! Beef and Liberty started in Shanghai and has opened up here in Hong Kong, in Wan Chai district. The restaurant is on the second floor just above Pizza Express on Star Street and the ambience is very casual and relaxing – as should a burger joint should be!

P1280557

Beef and Liberty offers diners delicious burgers, fries, wings and beers. It takes pride in serving hormone free grass fed beef. Apparently, all their beef is sourced from a small farm in Cape Grim region of Tasmania. I have been here twice now and both times it did not disappoint.

P1280558

We started with the chicken wings – chili sauce on the side as it was spicy (HKD58). I really liked this wings – crispy, juicy and the chili sauce was just perfect. I have friends who did not enjoy the wings as the skin was a little thick but Dragon and I really enjoyed it.

P1280559

If you are worried about eating too much carbs or are on a gluten free diet, you can try burger in a bowl which is really a gunless burger served with salad. It is an extra HKD20 but definitely worth it. I had the bacon cheese – beef, cheddar cheese, smoked bacon, bacon jam in a bowl. The beef was fantastic – cooked to perfection juicy and incredibly tender!

P1280567

‘The Mother’ had cheese – beef, cheddar cheese, iceberg, house bbq sauce (HKD79) and he was impressed. The bun was pretty good also but it was missing that runny sauce down your arm factor!

IMG_9156

I love how you can order 1/2 portion of chips – french fries and pommel frites (both are HKD15) and they were good! Even Dragon couldn’t resist.

P1280568

Service was fast and efficient, and the burgers awesome! On my next visit, I had the all day sets – was tempted to order the falafel but didn’t want to be disappointed so had the cheese burger and indeed it satisfied my burger cravings!

P1280566

Possibly my favourite place for burger thus far. Where is your favourite burger place?

Brasserie Kämp, Helsinki

Traveling is all about sightseeing, shopping, food and experiences. For me, most importantly would be the food! If the food was terrible, I think it would make the whole experience less enjoyable. Ok there has been some trips where I have done absolutely no research on food but I have managed to find little restaurant gems or markets that serve awesome snacks! Regardless, ‘The Mother’ knows that it has to some how revolve around food! Brasserie Kamp can be found on the main shopping drag of Helsinki. It is part of the Hotel Kamp and it has been open and serving breakfast, lunch, dinner for 100 years. The restaurant was a little more fancier than I thought but then again I wasn’t sure what to expect.

P1260534

Uncle pointed out on instagram that someone had gone here to have a burger. Judging from the picture, the burger looked sensational so I had to go and try it. We started with some bread, oddly Dragon loved rye and would not stop eating it.

P1260528

The lunch menu was vast but I couldn’t go past the Kamp burger – 140g grilled fillet of beef, chipotle and bacon dressing, tomato, caramelised onions, cheddar, lettuce served with a side of french fries! At 33 Euros it wasn’t a cheap burger so I had HIGH expectations! It did not disappoint, the beef patty was tender, the bun soft and it had the right amount of salad and sauces!  And the chips were a wonderful addition.

P1260535

‘The Mother’ encouraged me to try the sautéed reindeer meat with potato puree, lingonberries and fried onions with juniper berries. Now I had no idea what to expect. ‘The Mother’ had eaten reindeer prior to meeting me and said that it was tasty! I kind of felt sorry for poor little rudolf! The reindeer meat were a little gamey for my liking – it was tender but I didn’t like the after taste, even eaten with the ligonberries. The potato puree however, LOVED! Creamy and sinful!

P1260530

There’s also a kids menu which is awesome. Dragon had some pasta and chicken which she loved. Service was friendly and food came out relatively quickly. ‘The Mother’ wanted to come back again for the burger but I managed to persuade him to try other restaurants!

Ribs and Burgers, Neutral Bay

September 25, 2013 3 comments

I have yet to find a good rib place in Hong Kong. One of our friends used to make his own beef ribs which were amazing has gone to London to live, so no more ribs! So when my brother, F, suggested we go to Ribs and Burgers for lunch I couldn’t say no. Who can say no to ribs and burgers? As the name suggests, they specialise in both ribs and burgers.

P1240309

Neutral Bay is not an area I go very often, for one I hate the parking situation there but thankfully we found parking easily. There are a number of new restaurants in Neutral Bay – it has definitely been a while since my last visit that I didn’t even know about this place. There’s a large blackboard displaying the menu at the front of the order, whilst I perused the menu, the others went to find somewhere to sit. Everything on the menu sounded good, I wanted a burger AND ribs!

Both F and Dad couldn’t go past the original – primal cut beef mince patty, grilled, basted and served on a freshly baked sesame seed bun with iceberg lettuce, tomato, Spanish onion, dill pickles and ‘our pink and bbq sauce’ ($10). Both F and dad added bacon and cheese, F, the Swiss cheese ($12), whilst Dad, the America cheese ($12). The burger was pretty tasty, I love the soft patty and the bacon was definitely a great addition!

P1240320

The ribs menu is short and sweet, unlike the burger menu. We ordered two types of ribs (yes, we were hungry!) The beef ribs ($22) were generous in size. It’s no hurricanes but the beef ribs were tender that the meat falls off the bone and seriously flavoursome. The thick cut chips were a wonderful complement.

P1240322

We also ordered the pork riblets ($19), which was smaller but was just as good. The sauce was finger licking tasty that I gave up eating ribs with a knife and fork – best eaten with hands I say.

P1240324

We ordered a side of chicken wings ($9) – crispy chicken wings tossed in ‘our bbq sauce’ which was also delicious. Dragon could not stop eating them – without the sauce of course! She had a bit of the burger, and was definitely a fan.

Service minimal, you order at the counter, and they will bring the food to your table. The burgers and ribs were great, like I said, no Hurricanes but still not bad. We wanted to try something different, and this was good. Will definitely be back to try their gourmet burgers!
