Flour and Stone, Woolloomooloo

I have heard wonderful things about this place, the pastries, the pies and many more. For fans of Nadine Ingram’s cookie Couture gingerbread, the not so new news is that she has opened flour and stone in the old Sweet Inifinty space (which has now moved to the Strand) which is in Woolloomooloo.

Upon entering Flour and Stone, you are instantly greeted by smiling faces and the smell of delicious baked goods. I was tormented by the various cakes and cookies, I really wanted one of each.

We were hungry, so started with the slow braised lamb, potato and rosemary pie. Now as most of you know, I am not a huge fan of lamb, but this lamb pie was incredible. Tender, succulent lamb with no smell or after taste. It was seriously good,

Uncle ordered the leek and gruyere tart and OH MY GOODNESS!  The pastry was incredible, the soft creamy filling of leek and gruyere melted in your mouth. It was seriously tasty and I couldn’t help but buy one for the next day and seriously, I can definitely eat one right now. The tart was just A M A Z I NG!

We were full. But I did manage to buy a couple of things. One being the large ‘fine apple tart’ – thin crispy crust topped with finely sliced apples which is caramelised. It does tastes even better than it looks. Unfortunately, I had to share this with ‘The Mother’ and it did not satisfy my apple tart cravings!

The famous cookie couture – hand iced gingerbread, monkey shaped and it was good! I forgot how good they were.

Flour and stone serves many delicious goodies – cakes, scones, gluten free cookies, cookies, slabs of nougat, cheesecake and many savoury tarts including caramelised onion and goats cheese tarts and sandwiches.

They serve coffee alchemy coffee and pots of rabbit hole tea brewed in brown betty tea pots.

Came back a week later, E was craving for their old fashioned vanilla cake – how good can it be I thought? OMG! It could definitely be my favourite – soft, fluffy, melted in my mouth. Wanted to buy the whole cake but I knew that would be dangerous!

I love the croissant here too, soft, buttery, flakey – oh my. Absolutely scrumptious!

Brazilian BBQ, Churrasco, Woolloomooloo

Churrasco, a Brazilian style bbq restaurant where cooked meats are continuously brought to your table and offered to you until you are sick and before you know you know it, you are in a food coma! I have been to Braza Churrascaria before and loved it. 

The cost for this all you can eat is $35 per person and includes all the BBQ meat you can eat, rice, potatoes and beans with unlimited accompaniments such as chimichurri, vinaigrette, and farofa. I love the flipping coaster, Green being keep the food coming, and Red meaning STOP I’m full. I loved it so much that I had to take one home!

The potato salad reminded me a little of a potato and bacon bake and were creamy and moorish. The rice had a garlicky flavour, but the beans, I loved were wonderful and incredibly flavoursome.

Salads are $10.50 each and we ordered two servings of it. The girls thought we should at least have some sort of greens to balance the consumption of meat! Two servings of Churrasco Salad, mixed lettuce, tomatoes, capsicum, Spanish onion, cucumbers and Churrasco dressing – YUM!

One of the things I love about Brazilian style BBQ is meat on skewers. Unfortunately with Churrasco, not all the meat were on skewers, they were served on plates. However, sausages, chorizo, and chicken hearts! Not for the faint heart, but I love the chicken hearts! Tiny, succulent, tender and dipped in chimichurri sauce, it was oh so yummy!

A wide range of meats were on offer, eye fillet, sirloin, rump cap, scotch fillet and cooked ham. Yes, I had one of each! The meats were seasoned with salt only and eaten with chimichurri sauce, vinaigrette and farofa were wonderful. Most of the meat were medium rare, juicy and magnificently luscious. I really enjoyed the eye fillet and scotch fillet best.

However, my favourite was definitely the pork belly (surprise surprise!). Deliciously succulent and crispy on the outside, it seriously was wonderful!

And the bbq pineapple for dessert, which was sprinkled with cinnamon and then charcoaled until smoky. It was sweet, wonderful and no one could stop at just one.

B wanted dessert, bbq bananas ($9.50), which was served with ice cream and baileys and butterscotch sauce. It was a generous serving of dessert. The tender bananas with its skin were bbq’ed and the butterscotch sauce was heavenly! I couldn’t help but scrape all the bailey and butterscotch sauce – YUM!

The service is polite and friendly. The bar menu offers some delicious drinks with Brazilian twists on the classics. The boys couldn’t help but order a couple of glasses of Brazilian Mojitos.

The food at Churrasco were beautiful cooked. I was a little disappointed that not all the meat were on skewers though and the variety I thought weren’t as astounding as in Braza Churrascaria. It was definitely a fun way to eat, however, it is not great for vegetarians though. So many meat options and not enough vegetables. Be prepared to stuff yourself silly, I certainly did! Thank goodness I wore my fat pants; otherwise I don’t think I could have eaten as much as I did!

Late snack at Harry’s cafe de wheels

I was craving a hot dog for some strange reason and could only think off Harry’s Café de Wheels. I haven’t been here for a while now, this used to be my late night snack place during uni days after a big night out. Totally drunk off your face, nothing goes down better than a chili con carne hot dog or a meat pie with the lot (with mash potatoes and peas) both from Harry’s. This place opens till late – like 2.30 – 3 am in the morning, pending on which day, so there is plenty of time to drop by for a snack before going home!

I wasn’t drunk that evening, but oddly, was craving for a good hot dog. So I got my brother to drive me here and whilst the parking absolutely sucked, the hot dog was well worth it!

I ordered the hot dog with mashed peas – not quite sure why I didn’t go for the mash potatoes or both. The guy behind the counter asked what sauce I wanted, I couldn’t decide so asked for tomato / chili and mustard and my gawd… it was the perfect combination! The hot dog was HUGE! I struggled to get the whole thing in my mouth but I managed… surprisingly! Even my brother was utterly shocked! The frankfruit was soft and tender. It was absolutely perfect, just what I wanted.

My brother, F, ordered the chili con carne hot dog and if you thought mine was huge, his was even bigger! It had everything! The hot dog came with onions, con carne, chili, tomato sauce AND mustard! Not quite sure how he managed to put all that in his mouth but he did. It was also good! The chili con carne made it even spicier which was nice, but was way too much for me.

Eating the hot dog brought back many memories… uni memories, we sat there mesmerizing about the past, the good and the bad!

A beer would have gone nicely, but alas, no beer.

Hot dogs is not their only specialty, they also have pies, pasties and sweets! Opened at 6 different locations, it is seriously one of the best hangover cure!
